Background
In the last three months, the major social and political changes occur in the Middle East and North Africa. Started from Tunisia, Egypt and then spreads to Libya, Bahrain, Yemen, Oman, Jordan and even Saudi Arabia, the anti-government movements demand their rulers to step down. The Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali regime of Tunisia are collapsed after more than 23 years in rule. He was forced to give up by a wave of anti-government protests. The mass demonstrations also forced the Egypt’s President, Hoesni Mubarok, who has been in power for 30 years, to step down.
In contrast to Tunisia and Egypt, Gaddafi in Libya remains in power though he got pressure from the opposition movement and anti-government’s protests. Gaddafi responds the protest movement by attacking them which causes thousand Libyan people killed and injured. This attack triggered protest from International community, the Allied Forces lead by United States on behalf of UN resolution attacked Gaddafi. The Libya government reported that at least 114 people were killed and 445 injured during the military attacks by the Allied Forces. It seems that humanitarian tragedy occurred in Afghanistan and Iraq is repeated in Libya. Although the Allied Forces said that the military operation is aimed to protect Libyan people from humanitarian violence, however, many countries condemned it as an intervention action to Libyan sovereignty. It is believed that there is a political economy motive behind the attack.
The Sosio-political changes in the Middle East and North Africa has impact to the Islamic world. The changes are challenge as well as giving opportunities for Islamic movements to take strategic roles in developing the strong civil society in the Islamic countries. On behalf of democracy and humanity, Islamic communities should take action to prevent the hegemonic power controls political economy in the Middle East and North Africa.
